About Us

Our Business & Personal Ethos:
We have a simple approach to both life and business and this is based on the age old premise, that "what goes around, comes around".  With this in mind you will find Shelbourne Villa to be a warm, welcoming and most relaxing place to stay:
  • You will find your hosts to be open and helpful, but not intrusive. Our approach is to treat our Guests as we like to be treated ourselves.
  • We will respect both you and your personal beliefs - Shelbourne Villa is a "no discrimination zone"
  • We operate in a transparent manner - there will be no unpleasant surprises or hidden charges.
  • You will always find Shelbourne Villa and your room to be clean and well maintained.
  • You won't go hungry - our breakfasts are generous and you will be provided with plenty of variety.
  • If you are not happy about something we will listen without judging and do our level best to remedy the problem
We have simple goals:
  • To provide you with "Generous and Genuine Kiwi Hospitality".
  • To ensure that Shelbourne Villa is a warm, welcoming, safe and relaxing "Home Away From Home" for our Guests
  • To be good stewards of the resources we employ on a day by day basis.  Shelbourne Villa undertakes a range of initiatives to ensure that it operates in a socially responsible manner and to minimise our impact on the environment. Shelbourne Villa holds a “Green Leaders Silver” rating from TripAdvisor and a Gold environmental rating from Qualmark.

Your Hosts:
Your hosts at Shelbourne Villa are Kiwi born Val and Wayne Ballantyne
Val is a keen quilter, so if you are into fabric art you will find someone who shares your passion.  She is an active member of a community quilting group that meets weekly in Nelson.
Val also enjoys creating mosaics and loves reading.
Wayne’s interests revolve around the water - sailing and fishing.  Most of his boating experience has revolved around coastal and some offshore sailing.
Wayne is also an active crew member on the Nelson Volunteer Coastguard Rescue Vessel and the Secretary of Nelson Volunteer Coastguard.
We both originally hail from the lower South Island – Val from a farming family in the Catlins area and Wayne from Invercargill, where his father's commercial fishing business was based.  We "escaped" the Corporate World late 2002 and spent a summer cruising on our boat before moving to Nelson.

Wayne’s previous career as a Senior Corporate Banker has seen us live and work in many different parts of New Zealand. We have also travelled extensively overseas as well as throughout our own Country. Our favourites areas of New Zealand are Auckland, Nelson/Marlborough, the West Coast of the South Island and the Fiordland National Park.

Our joint interests are our family, travelling, sailing and bush walking.  We have 3 boys who we very proud of.
On the sailing front we have small yacht; “Eclipse” that we use to cruise around the top end of the South Island.
