  • The alpine area - lakes and rivers around St Arnaud, Nelson Lakes & Murchison. This encompasses the Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi national parks
What makes Nelson tick – The Economy

Nelson’s economy is based on four main industries;
  • Seafood; Port Nelson is the largest fishing port in Australasia and has a significant fish processing and engineering infrastructure to support a fleet of large deep sea trawlers.
  • Horticulture; with crops ranging from those found in markets gardens to several varieties of fruit and hops.
  • Tourism
  • Forestry; Nelson is a major exporter of un-processed logs, sawn timber and medium density fibre board
