Itinerary 1 - Art Wine & Gentle Adventure

Itinerary 1 - Art, Wine & Gentle Adventure
Day 1 - A Gentle Introduction To Nelson City & Art:
  • Arrive in Nelson City and check in to Shelbourne Villa
  • Explore the City on foot - depending on the time of day you may want to refresh yourself with coffee and a light snack at one of the inner City cafes that are within 5 or 6 minutes walk of your accommodation. Our favourite and the closest, is the Morrison Street Cafe.
  • Continue your exploration of Inner City Nelson and it's many galleries.  We can provide you with an excellent map that will help you to locate the type of works that interest you.
  • Visit Nelson's Queens Garden's where you will find and enjoy the Suter Art Gallery  There is also an excellent conservatory style cafe located in the Suter Art Gallery building.
  • As an alternative to the Queen's Gardens & Suter Art gallery, or if you arrived early and have more time, visit Nelson's renowned World of Wearable Arts museum (WOW).  This is a short 10 minute drive from the central City.
  • Return to Shelbourne Villa and freshen up before dining at one of Nelson's waterfront restaurants

A "must do" if you plan to be in Nelson on a weekend, is a visit to Nelson's Central City Saturday Morning Market.  This is a colourful and bustling event that will give you an appreciation of Nelsonians and the Nelson life-style.  You will find great food, clothing, art and get to observe the Region's diverse population at first hand - from the cosmopolitan to the alternative and artistic.
Day 2 - Sight-Seeing & Gentle Adventure:
  • Breakfast and depart Nelson for Kaiteriteri or Marahau, in time to enjoy a day of exploration and activity in the Abel Tasman National Park.  Drive time is approximately 1 1/4 hours
  • From Kaiteriteri or Marahau you will have a wide choice of  1/2 and full day outdoor activities:
    - Sea kayaking - full & half day
    - Catamaran sailing
    - Tours by water taxi or launch
    - Hiking or just picnic on the beach

You can also combine two 1/2 day activities
  • Your activity providor will return you to your departure point in time for you to be back in Nelson by late afternoon.
  •
On the return journey to Nelson, why not stop off at the sea-side township of Mapua - here you will find several restaurants where you can take your evening meal.

Day 3 - Wine, Art & Relaxation:
  • Breakfast at Shelbourne Villa and prepare for a day that will bring you a glorious mix of scenery, art and wine, as you explore the area between Nelson City and the Abel Tasman National Park.  This encompasses many Vineyards and working Artists galleries.
  • Today you will have a choice between driving your-self at a leisurely pace; we can provide maps and information to help you plan the day, or take an organised Art and Vineyard Tour.
  • This link will be useful to help you plan the day, if taking the self drive option.  You will find maps and all of the information needed to select which Wineries and Artists to visit.
  • If you prefer to join an organised tour, you have the option of doing so with an escorted group of other travellers, or, via a more personalised tour accompanied by a knowledgeable driver and guide.
  • If you feel a need for some pampering, as an alternative to a full day tour, why not take a half day tour and allow some time to visit a Day Spa, or, just for the ladies.
  • To finish the day we suggest dining at Nelson's award winning Hopgood's Restaurant.  You won't need to get back into a vehicle - Hopgood's is only a short 5 minute walk from Shelbourne Villa.  The menu show-cases fresh organic local produce.  The wine list also has a local emphasis.  You will also have the opportunity to sample beers from a number of the Region's award winning boutique breweries.
